"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind." William James

What does a psychologist do?

Psychologists are experts in human behaviour, having studied the brain, memory, learning, human development and the processes determining how people think, feel, behave and react. Psychologists apply their expertise using reliable and scientifically supported methods. Psychological treatments are widely used to assist individuals and families', APS 2016. Psychological treatments can vary, and can include treatments such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Schema Therapay and/or Psychodynamic approaches.

Taking the big step...

It is not always easy to identify when you need help, and then when you do, comes the more difficult task of seeking assistance! Hesitation creeps in, you begin to question whether therapy will really change things for you. Thoughts like, 'What if I don't have anything to talk about', 'Does my issue warrant help', 'What if I can't be helped' or 'What if I don't connect with the therapist' start to take over.
These what-if's are ultimately derived from fear of the unknown, a normal reaction to a situation or thought that is out of your comfort zone.

The good thing is, once assistance is sought,  a great sense of relief is often felt afterwards!©

When will I begin to feel better?

Depending on the complexity of the problem that is presented in therapy, and whether the individual is ready for change might determine the length of therapy. Anywhere between 6 to 12 sessions is when a shift in the way that you feel might occur, however keep in mind that each individual is different and progress can vary. Hence, change can occur within the above time frame or it can take much longer...

Keep in mind seeking assistance is one of the first steps to beginning to feel better.

The first session...

Apart from the first 10 minutes where paper work needs to be completed and introductions be made, the first and often second appointments are focused on you sharing your story and experiences.
Notes will be taken and some questions will be asked to help the psychologist make an assessment of your situation. An assessment is made so as to provide you with the best treatment possible.

Session length: 60 minutes.
